Homestead swimmer Eugenie Lanilis is the Bay Area News Group’s girls high school athlete of the week for April 25-May 1 after she received 11,753 votes (37.87%) when the 5 p.m. deadline arrived Wednesday.
Benicia swimmer Mikaela Gomez (7,937 votes/25.57%) finished second and Carondelet lacrosse player Sophia Van Berkum (3,702 votes/11.93%) was third.

Lanilis, a junior, won two events and anchored two winning relay teams at the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza finals.
She won the 50 free in 23.62 seconds and the 100 free in 51.49 seconds. She swam the final leg for the Mustangs’ victorious 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams.
