Capuchino basketball player Melesungu Afeaki received more than 19,000 votes to claim Bay Area News Group girls high school athlete of the week honors for Feb. 7-13.
Afeaki finished with 39.74% of the vote at the 5 p.m. deadline Wednesday to edge San Mateo soccer player Lisimani Helu (38.59%). Fremont-Sunnyvale soccer player Rylan Cashman took third.
Congratulations to all the candidates for this week’s recognition.
Afeaki, a 6-2 forward, scored 64 points, had 43 rebounds and added seven assists in a 3-0 week for Capuchino.
Averaging a double-double with 18.2 points and 12.2 rebounds per game, the senior will continue her career at the University of San Diego.
