Most of us hang a few lights, strew some tinsel and play some carols for the holidays. But some folks go far beyond, channeling their inner Clark Griswold — or decking the halls in such spectacular fashion, their holiday displays draw crowds of appreciative spectators.

Alameda County boasts some truly devoted magic makers, people like Deacon Dave, whose House of the Dove display at 352 Hillcrest Ave. in Livermore, features a walk-through display with 524,850 lights. An Alameda neighborhood hosts a Christmas Tree lane display that involves more than 50 homes. And a Union City cul de sac — Queen  Anne Court — will unveil its holiday light display and food drive Dec. 14-23.

And the Oakland Zoo goes all out in its glitzy glory, with plenty of light displays. Even the zoo’s new gondolas, which soar above the newest habitat areas, are illuminated with colorful twinkle lights.

Check out the slide show above for a little vicarious holiday enjoyment, then hit the road to explore the light shows here, in Contra Costa County, Santa Clara County, the Peninsula and across the entire Bay Area. (Psst, did we miss your favorite spot? Tell us about it in the comments.)
