In trying to define whether the Bay Area has a quintessential and recognizable style, interior designer Kristen Peña says it might not be so much of a style as a feeling.

Unlike other regional styles that are immediately identifiable by certain furniture designs or specific elements, Bay Area style is all about creating a cozy, welcoming and low-key decor.

Peña’s love of travel, color and textures lead her into designing children’s clothing and then opening her own interior design business, K Interiors, based in San Francisco. Essential, she says, to creating Bay Area style are quality pieces of furniture that are comfortable and will last, and dramatic lighting. The aim of Bay Area style, however, is to be welcoming.

Peña offered her thoughts on creating Bay Area style in your home.

Does the Bay Area have a recognizable style?

I think the Bay Area historically has been more traditional, but the interior design vibe has changed as more younger families stay in the city and more tech money floods in.

What’s the color story?

Lots of neutrals and colors grounded in the earth.

What are the must-have accessories?

The Bay Area likes local and handmade, so accessories that fit that bill are a win.

Is there a certain furniture style or essential pieces you need?

A foundation of quality furniture, including sofas and chairs, with the willingness to layer in less expensive side pieces. People are willing to spend more on pieces that last longer and will be comfortable.

The materials are organic with lots of texture and they have light, bright colors. The general mood is casual, light, bright, cozy and inviting.

How about plants?

The Bay Area loves ficus trees and palms.

What other elements are must-haves in the design?

Lighting seems to be a big ticket item that homeowners are willing to invest in. With lots of very high ceilings in the Bay Area we have the opportunity for lighting to be really spectacular and special.

Pendants, chained, hanging architectural pieces that can incorporate a lot of wood. The lights are an opportunity to bring in harder materials and architectural shapes. They are the masculine element in a feminine design.

How does Bay Area style mesh with our love for tech? Are we still hiding the television in a cabinet?

The Bay Area can be gadget heavy, which can be a sort of touchstone. There are the dudes that want a large TV on the wall because they’re still playing video games with their friends, but you can also have a concealed television that comes out of the ceiling.

What is Bay Area style trying to say?

We work hard and like nice things, but we won’t forgo comfort for style.

What are your favorite stores or places to shop for these style elements?

The best shops in the Bay Area, in my opinion, are March, General Store and Super Simple in San Francisco, and Esqueleto in Oakland.
