Millennials, who’ve been redefining everything from politics to family life, are also influencing both the style and popularity of what is becoming Bay Area style.

Angela Tafoya, editorial director at Lonny.com, a website and newsletter that speaks fluent millennial and focuses on home design and lifestyle, says millennials’ passion for social media has helped quickly spread the Bay Area style concepts far and wide.

Pinterest and Instagram are full of ideas and inspiration, and the casual style suits many people in the Bay Area. Lonny also has published a book by Sean Santiago and Lonny editors, “The Lonny Home” (Weldon Owen, $35), that serves as a guidebook to Bay Area style.

We asked Tafoya for her views about the new Bay Area style.

How would you define Bay Area style?

I think one of the best things about the Bay is that everyone marches to their own beat. But I guess if I were to think about a certain style that defines it, it is modern with a bohemian edge, comfort driven and definitely ahead of the curve in terms of smart home functionality.

What’s the color story?

From a general standpoint I’d say grays, neutrals and non-patterned pieces.

What are some must-have home accessories?

In the Bay Area, you can’t be caught out without wearing layers, and that’s the same for inside the home. Layering elements are essential. You always need to have a throw ready.

What is the style of furniture styles and what essential pieces do you need?

Ceramics, a cozy rug and space-saving furniture that has multiple uses.

What’s the general feel or mood of the style?

Laid back, natural, cozy.

Are their specific plants?

I think the fiddle leaf fig is hanging on strong, but snake plants are definitely having a moment. Plants are a definite must whether you have one or a whole shelf with them. They feel full of life and decorate the home. People take care of them like babies.

How does high tech fit in with Bay Area style?

There is a huge interest in smart homes, and we really see how the companies are creating things that fit in with personal spaces. It can be really beautiful as well as functional, like a television that displays a painting until you want to watch it, then it becomes a television.

What is Bay Area style trying to say?

I value comfort.

What are you favorite stores or places to shop for any or all of these elements?

McMullen in Oakland and General Store in San Francisco.
