Three complex fires throughout Northern California have burned through 669,175 acres from Sonoma and Solano counties in the North Bay to Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties in the south, causing six deaths and destroying 662 structures.
More than 3,000 firefighters worked Friday to contain the fires, gaining some ground even as dry thunderstorms and gusty winds forecast for as early as 5 a.m. Sunday threaten to wipe out any progress. The LNU Complex Fire in parts of Sonoma, Napa, Solano counties and beyond has burned more than 300,000 acres, making it the seventh most destructive fire in state history. Although it is now 15 percent contained, it is threatening the Sonoma County towns of Healdsburg and Guerneville.
The CZU Complex Fire has burned 63,000 acres in the Santa Cruz Mountains and parts of San Mateo County, forcing the evacuation of more than 77,000 residents and threatening the University of California Santa Cruz campus. It has burned 97 structures, including homes on the outskirts of the towns of Bonny Doon and Boulder Creek, threatening others on Highway 9. The fire is currently 5 percent contained.
The SCU Complex Fire in parts of Santa Clara, Alameda, San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties has burned almost 292,000 acres and at time threatened the eastern outskirts of San Jose and the Lick Observatory on Mount Hamilton. The fire is currently 10 percent contained.
