Football

Piedmont football in jeopardy

There’s a strong possibility that Piedmont High will go without a varsity football team next fall.

Dave Kiesel, commissioner of the West Alameda County Conference, said the school appears to be leaning toward dropping the varsity program for a year and possibly going only with a junior varsity team.

“Piedmont made the decision based on health and safety reasons,” Kiesel said. “The school does not have the numbers.”

Piedmont athletic director Bradley Smet did not return an e-mail.

Kiesel said Piedmont administrators will look at football turnouts among underclassmen and the incoming freshmen class before a final decision is made. He added that if Piedmont decides to go JV only, the league will help provide the Highlanders with a full schedule.

Piedmont was undefeated during the regular season as recently as 2014, and went 24-13 from 2015-17 under coach James Holan. But it has been below .500 in each of its last three full seasons, including 2-7 last fall. The Highlanders did go 5-0 during the Covid-abbreviated 2021 spring campaign.
