CASTRO VALLEY — Firefighters stopped a grass fire’s forward progress Monday along Interstate 580 lanes, authorities said.

Around 4:15 p.m., California Highway Patrol officers responded to reports of a vehicle that caught fire in westbound I-580 lanes east of the Eden Canyon Road off-ramp.

When officers arrived, they found a sport-utility vehicle sending up smoke and flames that had caught nearby vegetation alight.

Alameda County Fire Department and CalFire resources responded to the fire, dubbed the Eden Fire, which initially began at about 2 to 3 acres at a moderate rate of spread. Shortly after 5 p.m., the fire had grown to at least 10 acres.

The fire’s forward progress was stopped shortly before 5:45 p.m. Cal Fire said Tuesday that the fire had been 100% contained at 58 acres.

According to a city of Dublin social-media post, residents living west of Schaefer Ranch Road in the city’s Schaefer Ranch neighborhood were urged to prepare to evacuate if the fire’s spread continued. Police blocked off westbound traffic along Dublin Boulevard at Inspiration Drive.

Brothers Jasper and Jonas Nelson were commuting back to San Francisco on I-580 Monday afternoon with Esme, their family’s Australian Shepard, when they recorded cell phone video of the fire as they passed it along lanes eventually closed to traffic.

“Baby’s first highway fire,” Jasper can be heard saying to Esme in one of the videos.

There were no reports of injuries or immediately threatened structures.
