Dead & Company has announced a 17-date summer tour — but sorry, Bay Area Deadheads, there are no local gigs listed. And don’t expect the band to add more headlining shows to the tour.
“These 17 shows are the only headline tour dates Dead & Company will play in 2020!” a news release emphatically points out.
Does that mean this popular Grateful Dead offshoot — featuring Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, John Mayer, Bob Weir, Oteil Burbridge and Jeff Chimenti — truly won’t play any hometown or California shows this year?
Well, maybe. The fact that the news release specifically uses the term “headline dates” seems to leave a little wiggle room. The group could open a show in the Bay Area and still be true to its word, although that seems unlikely. Dead & Company can play stadiums on its own merit. The band doesn’t need to open for anyone.
A somewhat more likely scenario: It could appear as part of a festival, which may skirt the whole “headline” technicality.
If that’s the case, the only one that would make any sense at all is San Francisco’s Outside Lands. Dead & Company’s tour is scheduled to end on Aug. 7-8 at historic Fenway Park in Boston, cracking the door — at least a bit — for a gig at the Outside Lands closer that Sunday, Aug. 9. But it would mean traveling all the way back across the country.
But if that doesn’t happen, perhaps we could still close out 2020 on a Grateful note. And we can say with complete certainty that local Deadheads won’t be one bit peeved if the group decides to go back on its word and add another year-end closing run at San Francisco’s Chase Center or the Dead’s old stamping ground at Oakland Arena.
Meanwhile, tickets for all tour dates go on sale at 10 a.m. (local time) at ticketmaster.com.
