For the second time in two weeks, deputies near Lake Tahoe have released a bear trapped in a dumpster.

Nicknaming this bear “Bubs” in a tweet posted Thursday morning, the Placer County Sheriff-Coroner-Marshal’s Office said deputies freed the animal from a dumpster near Northstar and shooed him off, “but not before giving (an officer) the hairy eyeball.”

The incident follows the release of another bear trapped in a dumpster outside a King’s Beach motel Aug. 27, which involved responding deputies arriving to the cub’s sibling attempting to help. After scaling both sides of the dumpster and failing to lift the lid, the deputies move in.

The cub can be heard crying from inside the metal dumpster in the video tweeted out by the sheriff’s office. Unlike Bub’s straightforward escape, deputies in this case popped the dumpster lid with a pole and dropped a ladder inside for the cub to climb out. The officers then step back and give the cub space to reunite with its family before scurrying off. It’s unclear how the bears are able to enter the dumpsters.

Earlier this summer, the sheriff’s office released a video offering these tips to avoid bear encounters:

“Please don’t leave any food, drinks, or food wrappers in your cars, and make sure your garbage can is sealed tightly.

“Make sure the doors and windows to your homes are locked, as bears can be very clever and can easily find their way in.”
