HAYWARD — A man suspected in a killing at a homeless camp May 1 was fatally shot by police Wednesday afternoon during a traffic stop, authorities said.

The man’s name has not been released.

The man, who police said was in his 20s, was shot after a traffic stop at about 2:30 p.m.  Wednesday near Kelly and Wildwood streets.

What led up to the shooting is under investigation. Police have said more than one officer fired shots.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a news conference Wednesday, Hayward Chief of Police Toney Chaplain said the man killed was being sought in the shooting death of a homeless man on May 1.

The name of the 65-year-old man killed in the homeless camp shooting has not been released. The camp was on Industrial Parkway near Pacific Street.

Police have not yet said how they were able to link the man killed Wednesday to the May 1 killing or what the man’s connection to the neighborhood was.

“At this point, we are still investigating to determine what led to that outcome,” police said in part, asking for community members’ patience. Authorities did not release any other information immediately about how the shooting unfolded.

“We are not releasing any identifying information of the officers. This remains an ongoing investigation as witnesses and officer testimony is gathered and analyzed.  Anytime the Hayward Police Officers use force, regardless of degree, it is a serious matter that requires a thorough investigation.”

The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office will conduct an investigation parallel to an internal investigation within the department, police said.

The department’s last officer-involved shootings were in May and August of last year

Anyone with information about the case should call Hayward police Det. Eric Mulhern at 510-293-7176.
