President Trump told reporters he was “looking to do background checks,” and was “all in favor” of gun-control legislation making its way through the House of Representatives as he left the White House for Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas, on Wednesday.
Trump is expected to meet with shooting victims, victims’ families, first responders and police officers. His update on meetings with lawmakers about mass shootings and gun violence followed days of scrutiny over the White House’s delayed response to the shootings in Gilroy, Dayton and El Paso.
U.S. House Resolution 8 is a bill in Congress that would require background checks for any firearms purchase, make purchase and possession of most military weapons and expanded ammo clips illegal and authorize courts and law enforcement to confiscate weapons from people who pose a threat to their communities.
While H.R. 8 passed the House after being introduced in January, the bill has languished in the Senate since March.
