For fans of the romantic pairing of Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in “A Star Is Born,” it was the tremendous real-life moment they had been waiting for.
While performing at her concert residency in Las Vegas on Saturday night, Lady Gaga asked Cooper, sitting in the audience, to join her onstage for an impromptu duet of the film’s signature song, “Shallow.”
Yes, it was a role reversal of sorts of the movie’s famous scene when Cooper’s veteran rocker, Jackson Maine, invites Lady Gaga’s aspiring singer, Ally, on stage to sing “Shallow.”

In that soaring scene, the stars didn’t just make beautiful music together, they also generated tons of on-screen sexual heat. It was enough that audiences couldn’t help but wonder if Lady Gaga and Cooper had fallen a bit in love in real life — and not just in a creative, soul-bonding way.
No, the two each have insisted that they are romantically occupied elsewhere: Cooper with his model girlfriend, Irina Shayk, with whom he has a young daughter; and Lady Gaga with her fiancé, talent agent Christian Carino.
Given that “Shallow” is nominated for an Oscar for best original song, it’s certainly possible that Lady Gaga and Cooper, also the film’s director, will team up for another performance, this time on the Academy Awards stage on Feb. 24, according to the Los Angeles Times.
But that may be as far as their Oscar glory goes that night.
“A Star Is Born” became a massive hit with audiences and critics following its premiere at the Venice Film Festival in August. But its frontrunner status for leading Academy Awards has dimmed drastically in recent weeks, the prediction website Gold Derby reports.
Best picture honors from the Golden Globes and other awards and critics groups have been going to other films, notably “Roma,” “Green Book” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
Meanwhile, Glenn Close has overtaken Lady Gaga to become the No. 1 contender for best actress, after the veteran actress and seven-time Oscar nominee won the award from the Golden Globes, as well as the Screen Actors Guild on Sunday night. Lady Gaga’s only notable actress honor was when she tied Close for a Critics Choice award.
Cooper also failed to earn an expected best director Oscar nomination. He still is in the running for a best actor Oscar, but Christian Bale upset his chances of winning by receiving the Golden Globe trophy for “Vice,” while Rami Malek edged Cooper out for the acting trophy at the SAGs.
Hours after Lady Gaga and Cooper’s surprise duet in Las Vegas, the two hit the red carpet for the SAG awards Sunday night. But Gold Derby notes that “A Star Is Born” broke an unfortunate record by losing in all four of its SAG Awards races.
“This shut-out is one for the record books,” GoldDerby reported.
The “Star Is Born” cast lost to the cast for “Black Panther,” and supporting player nominee Sam Elliott was bested by Mahershala Ali for “Green Book.”
According to Gold Derby, “A Star Is Born” is now in fifth place to win best picture, behind “Roma,” “Black KkKlansman,” “The Favourite” and “Green Book.” Meanwhile, Lady Gaga, Cooper and Elliott each are in third place for best actress, actor and supporting actor, respectively.
Right now, the best chances “A Star Is Born” and Lady Gaga have of scoring an Oscar is for “Shallow,” which she co-wrote.
In that respect, Lady Gaga and Cooper’s impromptu performance Saturday night makes a lot of sense. It could have been a rehearsal for their big anticipated Oscar moment when they perform and when the song wins the trophy.
But the performance also gave the two the chance to work together again. Fans were utterly delighted.
