Come with us on a trip out to Walnut Creek’s Heather Farm Park to enjoy the tranquil sounds of the water fountain at the fishing pond.
Walnut Creek voters in 1965 approved a bond measure to fund community parks. The city was able to purchase 50 acres of the historic Heather Farm, then joined it with 5 adjoining acres previously donated by Phil and Ruth Bancroft. A park and swimming complex were developed on the site.
Heather Farm, a 255-acre ranch, included a thoroughbred horse training facility, Spanish-style mansion, half-mile track, 48-stall stable, and barn. Named after owner John W. Marchbanks’ champion stallion Heather King, it was built in 1921, according to “Walnut Creek An Illustrated History,” by Brad Rovanpera.
Heather Farm Park officially opened in 1970 and became the city’s largest park. The 102-acre park includes a swimming complex, dog park, sports fields, a skate park and more.
