October has arrived and with it, a flurry of events designed to tempt and treat pet lovers and pets alike.

A number of organizations have planned galas and special gatherings with an eye toward raising money for pets in need. The causes are serious, but that doesn’t mean the events aren’t fun, too. So mark your calendars for …

Tails and Ales

The Humane Society Silicon Valley offers Tails and Ales, a pet- and family-oriented festival that gives people and animals the opportunity to celebrate each other in support of Humane Society Silicon Valley. On-leash pets are welcome.

More than 1,000 people and their pets attended last year’s Tails and Ales event, raising more than $70,000 to benefit the animals at shelter.

Festival features and activities include food trucks, breweries and wineries, live music by Wild Hare, pet-friendly vendors, and family- and pet-friendly activities. All the action is set for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 13, at Mitchell Park, 600 E. Meadow Dr., Palo Alto.

Hot Rods 4 Paws car show

The fifth annual Hot Rods 4 Paws benefit car show supports Furry Friends Pet Relief, which aids more than 3,000 Bay Area pets annually, helping their owners pay for vaccines, preventative medical assistance, microchipping and spay and neuter surgeries, allowing people to keep their pets at home and out of shelters.

The hot rod show is a family-friendly event with vendors, food trucks, performers, pet costume contests, kids play zone, raffle prizes, animal rescues and adoptions and a DJ.

The car show is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 27 outside Petco, 5481 Lone Tree Way, Brentwood. If you want to enter your hot rod, car check-in starts at 8 a.m. and there is a $25 fee.

Black and White Fur Ball

The 15th annual Black and White Fur Ball is a day of family fun and adoptions of black-and-white pets including cats, dogs, rabbits and two goats. There will be hors d’oeuvres, non-alcoholic beverages, music and raffles.

The Ball is set for noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 13, at the Hayward Animal Shelter, 16 Barnes Court in Hayward.

Chow-o-Ween meet up

LB Steak on Santana Row in San Jose is hosting Chow-o-Ween, a doggy meet up featuring local pup-lebrity Teddy Chow Chow, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Oct. 31. In the spirit of Halloween, humans are urged to bring their dogs, dressed to impress, to the restaurant’s patio for a costume contest that begins at twilight.

The restaurant will feature a special “Doggy Dining” menu for the canines that includes Beggin’ Bacon  crispy bacon strips, Cluckin’ Good grilled chicken breast, Tail Waggin’ Wagyu beef patty, Good Dog New York steak, and a treat bag of  house-made dog biscuits. For the dog’s guests, the regular LB Steak dinner menu will also be served that evening, both on the patio and in the main dining room. The restaurant is at 334 Santana Row, San Jose.

Howl-ooo-ween

Get your trick or treat on with the animals at Lindsay Wildlife Experience’s Howl-ooo-ween, its most popular event for miniature ghosts and goblins and their families, 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 25. Come in costume and play games at the Arachnid Arcade, be frightened by some taxidermy in the “creepidermy” room and meet a mad scientist.

Each child will receive their own Lindsay Wildlife Howl-ooo-ween trick-or-treat bag. There also will be the opportunity to meet some live, not-so-scary animals, along with spooky story time, face painting and crafting. A food truck will be at Lindsay starting at 5 p.m.

Got other plans that night? No worries. Lindsay is featuring “Not-So-Scary
Animals!” during its normal exhibit hall hours, Oct. 23-31. Visitors will meet bats and owls, participate in a Halloween-themed scavenger hunt and visit with not-so creepy crawly animals.

Lindsay Wildlife Experience is at 1931 First Ave., Walnut Creek. Children 2 and younger get in free; admission is $10 for members, $15 for all others. Purchase online or call 925-627-2913 or visit lindsaywildlife.org.
