OAKLAND — Two World War II era hand grenades in “pristine condition” that were found Wednesday afternoon in a vacant West Oakland house were later destroyed, authorities said.
The grenades were found around 2:35 p.m., Wednesday at a house under renovation in the 800 block of Mead Avenue west of San Pablo Avenue.
They were removed from the home by the Alameda County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad and taken to the bomb range in Dublin where they were destroyed, Sheriff’s Sgt. Ray Kelly said.
The grenades were the kind issued to U.S. forces in World War II and “were in pristine condition,” Kelly said. They apparently were in their original container and even though “they were historical in nature, they were still very dangerous,” Kelly said.
There were no reports of injuries, and police provided traffic control.
