Gary Radnich, the undisputed king of the sports airwaves in the Bay Area for the last three decades, announced his retirement from television on Tuesday.
Radnich, who rose to Bay Area fame throughout his 34-year career at KRON4 News with his good-natured, rarely serious, off-the-cuff observations, indicated his last TV segment will be around Sept. 1.

The 68-year-old San Jose native has hosted one of the nation’s top-rated mid-day sports shows on the radio at KNBR-680 AM for the past 24 years. He gave no indications he’d be stepping away from his radio show, for which he was inducted into the Bay Area Sports Radio Hall of Fame in 2010.
Radnich’s TV show has also been a long-time hit with fans. Three times the Associated Press has named his KRON segment the “Best Sportscast in California.”
Radnich first made a name for himself while growing up in San Jose as he became an All-American basketball player at Branham High. He went on to play collegiately at both Brigham Young and UNLV.
Before joining KRON4 in 1985, Radnich was the sports director at WBNS-TV in Columbus, Ohio. He was also the play-by-play announcer for Ohio State’s football broadcasts during that time.
