HERCULES — A 18-year-old Oakley man was killed after he crashed his car on an offramp early Wednesday, creating a vehicle fire that also seriously injured his 18-year-old passenger, authorities said.

The victim’s name was not immediately released pending notification of next of kin. Police say the cause of the crash remained under investigation. It occurred around 1 a.m., on the westbound lanes of Highway 4 in Hercules, according to a news release from the California Highway Patrol.

An 18-year-old Hercules woman remained hospitalized Wednesday afternoon with “major injures,” police said. When firefighters arrived, the car was on fire and both victims needed to be extricated. The man was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Police say they don’t know at this stage if drugs or alcohol were a factor. They encourage witnesses to call CHP investigations at 925-646-4980.

Correction, July 12, 2021 Because of erroneous information provided by a law-enforcement agency an article listed the wrong age and city of residence for a person killed in a crash on Highway. Authorities later confirmed that the man killed was Caimar Coleman, 18, of Oakley.
