SAN LEANDRO — A woman whose car crashed into San Leandro Marina waters late Tuesday night died early Wednesday from her injuries, police said.

Authorities are trying to identify the woman, who they said was in her mid-20s.

Police, firefighters and rescue swimmers responded to the marina about 11 p.m. Tuesday after numerous 911 calls that a car had crashed into the water and was completely submerged.

Police said witnesses said screams could be heard coming from the vehicle.

The first responders extricated the woman at 11:09 p.m. before paramedics transported her to Highland Hospital following CPR.  She died later at the hospital, police said.

The blue Ford Mustang she was driving ended up fully submerged about 50 to 100 feet off the shore on the west side of Mulford Point Drive in water no more than 10 feet deep, according to Battalion Chief Michael Abele.

“This is a sloping curve that is kind of misleading and accelerated speeds are dangerous at any time,” Abele said.

“I’ve had multiple vehicles into the water over the years. Some in this area, some by the launch, it just really depends. Some are discarded, stolen cars to be honest.”

San Leandro police Capt. Ali Khan said the woman was not being pursued by any other vehicles and that the cause of the crash is under investigation.
