We’re headed into the last weekend of Black History and The Marsh has just the show for the occasion.

“An Evening of Negro Spirituals: Crossing Rivers and Building Bridges through Song” is a solo show by Oakland soprano, actress and educator Dr. Candace Y. Johnson combining song, storytelling and spoken-word performance to span the history of the the Black American experience, from the first African immigrants through their generations of descendants. She explores the wonder of how people could create beautiful, moving spirituals amid the horrors of slavery, and aims, as organizers say, to “entertain, enlighten, and build bridges across generations, races, and cultures.”

Johnson has performed at Carnegie Hall and the the Manhattan Center, and brought her solo show about Black identity and expression, “Vox in a Box,” to The Marsh in 2019.

She’ll live-stream two performances of “Negro Spirituals” this weekend, but the show will not available on demand afterward.

Details: 7:30 p.m. Feb. 27, 5 p.m. Feb. 28; free but donations encouraged; themarsh.org.
