OAKLAND — A double killing suspect in a standoff Thursday afternoon with police in East Oakland has surrendered after a several-hour standoff inside a retail establishment, authorities said.
A hostage held during the standoff was released unharmed about 1:50 p.m.
Police negotiators had worked to convince the suspect, who was armed with a handgun, to surrender. Shortly before 3:30 p.m., police posted to social media that a shot was heard inside the building, but said negotiators were continuing to talk to the man.
Gunshot heard from inside the business.
Negotiations team still in communication with the armed gunman and requesting for a peaceful surrender
The situation began at about 11:15 a.m. in the 1600 block of High Street, a busy commercial area, after the man was spotted going into the building.
Police initially said the man was wanted for a violent crime but have since said he is wanted for an Oakland double killing. According to a KPIX-TV reporter, Oakland police Deputy Chief LeRonne Armstrong said the man was sought in connection with last week’s triple shooting in the 1900 block of 84th Avenue in East Oakland, in which two victims died.

Dozens of police, including tactical units and negotiators, were on the scene trying to convince the man to surrender.
No injuries have been reported so far.
Numerous streets in the area have been shut down while police deal with the man.
