No. 1 Campolindo 55, No. 4 Miramonte 46

In a game delayed more than an hour because of a power outage, Campolindo star Aidan Mahaney showed Friday night that he doesn’t have to light up the scoreboard to make a difference.

With the outcome up for grabs in the final minutes, three assists from Mahaney led to open 3-pointers by Cade Bennett, Clay Naffziger and Shane O’Reilly.

Then Mahaney himself made a dagger three from the wing with defenders draped around him to ice a victory at home in Moraga over rival Miramonte.

“He showed what we know about him; he’s a winner,” Campo coach Steven Dyer said. “He’ll do what it takes to win games.”

Campo, ranked No. 1 by the Bay Area News Group, improved to 18-1 overall and 6-0 in the Diablo Athletic League’s Foothill Division. The Cougars have won 12 in a row and 37 of 38 dating to 2020.

Fourth-ranked Miramonte fell to 17-3, 4-2.

Playing before another tiny gathering because of district-wide COVID restrictions, which are expected to ease next week, Campo struggled in the opening quarter as Miramonte took a 14-8 lead.

Bennett’s 3-pointer cut the margin to 14-11 just before the lights went out. An auto accident on nearby Moraga Road knocked out the power in the surrounding area.

The teams were close to suspending the game until today when the power returned an hour after the gym went dark.

“Right before the lights went on, we kind of agreed to resume at noon tomorrow,” Dyer said. “We were five minutes away from sending our kids home.”

The delay lasted 81 minutes.

Bennett’s coast-to-coast drive and left-handed layup at the halftime buzzer gave Campo a 22-21 lead. The Cougars didn’t relinquish the advantage through a tight second half.

O’Reilly had 19 points and Bennett finished with 15 for Campo.

“Shane is a great offensive player,” Dyer said. “He’s a great shooter. He’s gotten a lot better with his mid-range and pull-up and is good about taking it to the rim. He’s a three-level scorer for us.

“And Cade is just our rock. You know you’re going to get everything from Cade. He doesn’t get fazed. He plays as hard as anybody I’ve ever coached. He’s a winner. I thought he had a great leadership game for us tonight.”

Miramonte coach Chris Lavdiotis lauded his team’s defense on Mahaney and Matt Radell.

“We are very pleased with our effort tonight,” Lavdiotis said in an email. “This could have gone our way but for a play or two late. Just an excellent high school game.”

The Longhorns were still missing four starters because of COVID protocols, Independence coach Skip Yenchik noted in an email.

“Really tough situation for the Longhorns,” Yenchik said. “Leigh will get guys back and probably help determine a league champion. Still could find a way to at least tie for a championship if they win out. If healthy, will be a tough out come playoffs”

As for Independence, Yenchik said it was a “business-like effort from start to finish.”
