RICHMOND — Firefighters were at the scene of a second-alarm fire at a community center Wednesday, authorities said.
Shortly before 3 p.m., firefighters responded to Booker T. Anderson Community Center, 960 South 47th St., for a report of a vegetation fire near a building. When firefighters arrived, they found the entire side of a building involved with flames extending into its attic, Richmond Fire Capt. Rico Rincon said.
Rincon immediately called a second alarm to boost their response, and firefighters carried lines into the building and outside, cutting a hole in its roof to battle any fire there. Other fire departments, including Rodeo-Hercules and Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, responded to provide mutual-aid coverage of the city.
All building occupants made it out to safety before firefighters arrived, and there were no reports of injuries. Firefighters were expected to remain at the scene for at least two more hours for overhaul, and no cause or estimate of damages was immediately available, Rincon said.
