SAN JOSE – A late Tuesday night shooting killed two people and injured four others a couple of blocks south of San Jose State University, according to police.

No suspects have been identified and a precise motive has not been determined by San Jose police, who were examining the crime scene well into Wednesday morning. At least one witness described a car speeding off after the gunfire.

“We’re still interviewing witnesses, we’re still connecting the dots,” Sgt. Christian Camarillo said at a news conference Wednesday.

Camarillo said the shooting had no association with SJSU other than being nearby, and that there was no ongoing public danger posed by the attack.

“As far as we know, it has no connection to the university or the campus,” he said. “The only thing involved with San Jose State is the proximity to where this event happened.”

The shooting was reported about 10 p.m. in the 600 block of South Eighth Street near East Reed Street, and responding officers found two men gravely wounded who were soon pronounced dead at the scene. Three other victims, two men and a woman were taken to the hospital from the shooting site and are expected to survive, police said.

Also Wednesday morning, police announced the discovery of a sixth victim when a man, while being interviewed by police, discovered he was bleeding from a superficial wound, Camarillo said. That person was determined to have been injured in the shooting and was taken to the hospital.

The victims were at or near a sidewalk memorial formed to honor a 22-year-old San Jose man who died Tuesday after authorities say his car collided with the back of a flatbed truck on Highway 101 near Tully Road. KPIX cited witnesses who said a white car pulled up and someone inside opened fire on the gathering.

Nearby resident Kris Grischott, a recent San Jose State graduate, said he heard five shots and a car speeding away.

“I was just sitting in my room, working on my laptop, and heard five shots go off,” Grischott told Jonathan Rivas, an independent video journalist. “There was a bunch of screaming and cars skirting. … I heard the shots, and then I heard a girl screaming in agony. It sounded like a few people.”

The names of the victims who died were not immediately released by authorities, pending their formal identification and notification of their next of kin by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.

The killings mark the 27th and 28th homicides of the year in San Jose. There were 25 homicides recorded in the city at the same point last year.
