Movement to rename bridge after Rep. John Lewis gains support

The longtime congressman and lion of the civil rights movement led some 600 protesters in a famous Bloody Sunday march across the Edmund Pettis Bridge in Selma, Ala. in 1965 before he was beaten by state troopers. Televised images of the brutality protesters faced that day helped galvanize national opposition to racial segregation.

Goya boycott becomes political flashpoint in election cycle

The hashtag #Goyaway started trending on social media on Friday, July 10 after Robert Unanue, CEO of Goya Foods, praised President Donald Trump one day earlier and compared him to his grandfather, who founded the company. Ivanka Trump, the President’s daughter, later tweeted a photo to endorse Goya as outraged latinos swore off the nation’s largest latin food company online. One political scientist called the move “Hispandering” in an interview with the New York Times. Trump’s shifting poll figures among latino voters — about 25 percent support — is in “the lower end of the range that Republican presidents have attracted for decades.”

Washington Redskins will investigate sexual harassment accusations

The Washington Post first reported on 15 former female Washington Redskins employees and two journalists who covered the football team accusing team staff of sexual harassment and verbal abuse. Two staffers accused have since left the organization as it undergoes a renaming attracting far more attention nationwide.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg announces liver cancer recurrence

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is undergoing chemotherapy at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore to treat a recurrence of cancer that’s yielding “positive results” The treatment is yielding “positive results.” The liberal Supreme Court justice, 87, told CNN she’s “fully able” to continue in her post.

Gov. Gavin Newsom mandates online schooling this fall for hardest-hit counties

Thirty-two of California’s 58 counties are on the list, according to Newsom, who unveiled a series of rules that determine when students can return to classrooms and the measures schools must take to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and deal with any cases that occur.
