Coronavirus myths go mainstream: Social platforms scrub conspiracy videos

Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have removed a video featuring several doctors making false and dubious claims related to the coronavirus after it went viral earlier this week. The video, published by the right-wing media outlet Breitbart News, featured a group calling themselves “America’s Frontline Doctors” staging a news conference to advise people against wearing masks in public and make a range of claims that run contrary to multiple studies on anti-malarial treatments already tested for the respiratory disease.

The Breitbart clip is the only the latest load of false information packaged into a video for online circulation and peddled by right-wing media as the country faces a new surge in cases. Sinclair Broadcast Group, the country’s largest broadcaster and owner of 193 TV stations, decided against airing a segment featuring a widely discredited documentary known as “Plandemic,” which promotes a conspiracy theory suggesting that Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, was responsible for the creation of the coronavirus.

Stimulus negotiations: GOP’s $1 trillion opening bid would cut unemployment benefits by $400

Congressional Democrats offered a $3 trillion package to extend millions of Americans’ jobless benefits, fund school reopenings and offer eviction protections, the Associated Press reported. One of the biggest differences between the parties is the weekly unemployment benefit amount the federal government will provide: Democrats want to give $600, while Republicans want to slash it to $200.

North Korean leader says nuclear arsenal will prevent war

“There will be no more war on this Earth,” Kim Jong Un said in a July 27 speech to a group of veterans on the 67th anniversary of the truce that effectively ended the Korean War.

The North Korean leader added that his country would defend itself against “against any high pressure and military threats of imperialists and hostile forces,” CNN reported.
