If everything were normal, Olympic athletes would be fine tuning their training regimen as they get ready for the Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
Unfortunately, the games have been delayed until July 23, 2021, because of the spread of COVID-19. Not only has the coronavirus postponed their goals, but the pandemic has also disrupted their training. Many athletes such as American archer Brady Ellison and Australian sprinter Steve Solomon have to train in isolation, keeping their skills sharp for another year.
Other competitors such as Venezuelan karateka Antonio Jose Diaz Fernandez and British rower Polly Swan have to make major adjustments to their lives. Diaz relies on teaching to get by and has adapted by reaching students through video. Meanwhile, Swann has found an additional role after she completed her medical degree. When she isn’t training for the Olympics, she works as a junior doctor.
In addition, because of the shelter-in-place orders, many athletes have found that their normal training grounds have been shuttered. They have had to scramble to find new places to train. Swimmer Michael Andrew had to find a residential pool in San Diego after his normal pool shut down while javelin thrower Kara Winger offered her home as training space for fellow track and field athlete Ariana Ince.
The photo gallery above shows how these athletes are keeping healthy and maintaining their skills while they wait for a chance to compete in 20201.
