Tune in and watch the sun rise behind Mount Diablo, a 3,849-foot summit in the 150-mile long Diablo Range.

While not the tallest peak in the range, Diablo features a beacon first illuminated in 1928 as a guiding light for transcontinental aviation. It is one of the five guiding beacons that the former Standard Oil of California installed along the West Coast and the only one known to be still in operation.

In past decades, the beacon has only been lit on Dec. 7, Pearl Harbor Day. During the coronavirus pandemic, however, Save Mount Diablo staff and volunteers have coordinated an effort to light the beacon at sunrise each Sunday since Easter and turn it off the following sunrise. This Monday marks the fourth week the beacon has been lit to recognize heroes of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ted Clement, Save Mount Diablo’s executive director, says the beacon lighting also pays respect to the dead and those suffering, lifts eyes to higher ground and the light and reminds spectators of the healing power of nature.
