The span opened May 27, 1937, welcoming 200,000 people on pedestrian day. Cars were allowed to cross a day later, on May 28.
Upon opening, the Golden Gate was the world’s longest suspension bridge at 4,200 feet or 1.7 miles. The span connects San Francisco and Marin County.
Before the coronavirus forced many to stay home, the bridge handled 110,000 cars daily. If you want to cross the bridge via car — you’ll get some unparalleled Bay Area views! — you’ll need to have a FasTrak. Learn more at the bridge district’s website.
