Is there a Bay Area landmark more famous than the Golden Gate Bridge? Here’s wishing a very happy 83rd birthday to arguably the most beautiful bridge on the globe.

The span opened May 27, 1937, welcoming 200,000 people on pedestrian day. Cars were allowed to cross a day later, on May 28.

Upon opening, the Golden Gate was the world’s longest suspension bridge at 4,200 feet or 1.7 miles. The span connects San Francisco and Marin County.
