Sen. Bernie Sanders won California’s presidential primary and declared victory in three other states Tuesday night, while former Vice President Joe Biden claimed decisive wins in most other Super Tuesday states.
The other two major contenders, Sen. Elizabeth Warren and former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, appeared certain to lose every state — including Warren’s stinging defeat to Biden in her home state of Massachusetts. Bloomberg dropped out Wednesday morning and endorsed Biden after spending a historic $500 million on his campaign and winning only four delegates in American Samoa amid the first set of primary races his name even appeared on the ballot.
“They don’t call it Super Tuesday for nothing,” said a resurgent Biden, who all but ignored California until Election Day, at a rally in Los Angeles. “It’s still early, but things are looking awful, awful good.
Biden’s wins in Alabama, Arkansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Virginia, Tennessee, and Texas proved a remarkable comeback for a candidate who floundered in the first three races in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada. Sanders won in Colorado, Utah and his home state of Vermont. Maine remained too close to call on Tuesday night, though the New York Times and other outlets reported Wednesday morning that Biden narrowly led Sanders there. Warren’s campaign assessed her viability moving forward as progressives mounted pressure for the senator to suspend her campaign.
