(Update: The repair work was completed and the highway reopened by 4 p.m. Friday.)

A 20-mile segment of the main highway between Las Vegas and Reno was closed because of damage caused by Friday’s  6.5 earthquake.

Nevada Highway Patrol photos showed cracks on U.S. Highway 95 that Trooper Hannah DeGoey said were caused by the quake west of Tonopah.

No injuries were reported, and crews were working to reopen the highway, DeGoey said.

The U.S. Geological Service reported the the temblor struck at 4:03 a.m.  The quake was upgraded after being initially reported at 6.4-magnitude.

Dozens of aftershocks were recorded in the next three hours, including two with estimated magnitudes of 4.9.

Highway 95 is closed between Highway 360 and Highway 6, north of Coaldale. The closest detour is 45 miles — heading west toward the junction of 6 and 360, and then back east to 95.

Friday’s epicenter is 40 miles east of that of the April 11 earthquake, magnitude 5.2, near California’s Mono Lake. Dozens of quakes around magnitude 3 have been recorded in that area in the past month.
