Photos: Missing Palo Alto couple the “spiritual conscience” of the neighborhood

Neighbors adorned the couple’s home with welcome banners and are awaiting a grand celebration for their return

PALO ALTO — They’re expected home any day now — and neighbors who had feared the worst are ready.

They’ve put up balloons and strung a “Hip Hip Hooray” banner across the front porch and wrapped “welcome home” streamers around the pillars.

Ian Irwin and Carol Kiparsky, who were found shivering, scratched and dehydrated Saturday after being lost in the woods of Tomales Bay State Park for nine days, were recovering Monday at MarinHealth Medical Center in San Rafael. They are both in their 70s.

To many in this tight-knit neighborhood a few blocks from the shops and restaurants downtown, Ian and Carol are its heart and soul — and were almost always seen together.
