OAKLAND — Firefighters and police have closed a stretch of an Oakland Hills road after a solo injury collision brought down a power pole and sparked at least two small fires, authorities said.

Around 4:20 p.m., firefighters received reports of a vehicle crash on Shepherd Canyon Road between Snake Road and Paso Robles Drive, Oakland Fire spokesman Michael Hunt said.

Arriving firefighters found an injured person behind the wheel of a BMW coupe, and provided care until paramedics arrived to take them to a hospital where they were listed in stable condition.

The crash damaged nearby transformers, sparking at least two fires that were quickly extinguished, Hunt said.

“This year alone, OFD abated over 65 miles of roadsides to prevent the spread of wildfires from incidents just like this,” Hunt said.

“When a vehicle goes off the road and takes down a power pole like we saw today in the high fire hazard severity zone the chances of a serious fire are extremely high. That 10 to 15 feet of clearing off Shepherd Canyon Road made it so that the pole didn’t land on trees or dry brush, likely preventing a rapid spread of a wildfire.”

Pacific Gas & Electric crews also responded to the area, with reports of multiple houses near the Montclair Village neighborhood suffering power outages.
