Why Jodie Foster gave Aaron Rodgers a Golden Globes shout-out

The Oscar winner said she and the NFL star have never met and she had nothing to do with introducing him to Shailene Woodley.

Jodie Foster topped her surprise win at Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards by thanking Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the same sentence as her wife and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Why did Aaron Rodgers get such a shout-out at the 78th Golden Globes ceremony? Foster admitted in a recent interview she had never met him, but the “thanks” was just Foster returning the gratitude.

Sunday night, after Foster won Best Supporting Actress for “The Maritanian,” she concluded her speech by saying: “I love my wife, thank you Alex and Ziggy and Aaron Rodgers, the Hollywood Foreign Press, right?”

The two-time Oscar winner gave her speech virtually with her wife, Alexandra Hedison, and their dog Ziggy, by her side. Foster and Hedison appeared to be otherwise taking a relaxed approached to watching the ceremony from home by dressing comfortably in pajamas.

“This is awesome! What a night!” Foster said.

With regard to Rodgers, Foster has explained she’s a big fan and their mutual admiration has been publicly building since he inexplicably gave her a shout-out when accepting his NFL Most Valuable Player award in January.

It’s also grown as Rodgers and Shailene Woodley, Foster’s “The Maritanian” co-star, confirmed that they had become engaged.

Foster told Yahoo News that she had nothing to do with introducing Rodgers and Woodley.

“I did not set up Shailene and Aaron,” Foster said. “I have never met Aaron Rodgers, but it is possible that I do like to talk about how much I love the Green Bay Packers. And sometimes I can talk a little too much about that. So, of course Shailene was very aware of my enthusiasm for the team.”

Foster also told Jimmy Kimmel about her Packers love and said she wanted to reciprocate for Rodgers naming her in his MVP speech. After her Golden Globes win, she joked to reporters that she and Rodgers are now in a competition to thank each other publicly as much as possible.

“I’ve decided that, not only am I a huge Packers fan, but I am MVP — I am competitive MVP with Aaron Rodgers,” she told reporters. “Yes, I’m a huge Packers fan, and, in fact, I just got a very cute video from Aaron Rodgers where he says he is going to get me back. So we’ll see who wins.”

Foster’s win Sunday was her third Golden Globe honor over the span of her career. Foster plays a defense attorney in the Guantanamo Bay legal drama “The Maritanian,” which tells true story of Mohamedou Ould Salahi, who was wrongly held at the detention camp without charge or trial for 14 years.

Foster appeared totally surprised to be announced the winner by Jamie Lee Curtis.

“Oh, my god, are you kidding me?! I think you made a mistake um, I am — uh, I’m a little speechless. I just never expected to ever be here again!” Foster said.

Even though Foster was surprised, she also made sure to get in mention of Woodley, along with the other “amazing filmmakers” connected to “The Mauritanian,” including director Kevin McDonald.
