Memorial Day ceremonies took place across the Bay Area to remember those killed in action.
At Oak Hill Cemetery in San Jose, former U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta addressed the crowd during his keynote speech. Panetta, 83, was introduced by his son, Jimmy Panetta, who has represented the Central Coast in the House since 2017.
The event, organized by the United Veterans Council of Santa Clara County, included a World War I display by the Eagle Field Foundation, with uniformed actors and restored vehicles, and a flyover by the 129th Air Rescue Squadron. Commemorations following the keynote to honor the Grand Army of the Republic and Vietnam veterans.
In Hayward, a ceremony at Chapel of the Chimes included special guest speakers and a singer, the Stuart Highlander Bag Pipers, a POW table and a dove release. Many other ceremonies also took place locally on Monday.
Originally established during the Civil War, Memorial Day honors those who have died in military service for the U.S.
