Dougherty Valley golf standout Jacob Ponce has been named Bay Area News Group boys high school athlete of the week for May 23-29 after he finished with 4,348 votes (31.91%) at the 5 p.m. deadline Wednesday.
De La Salle baseball player Kai Smith (19.66%) took second and Archbishop Mitty baseball player Antonio Cabrera (15.34%) was third.

Ponce made four birdies on the front nine and four on the back nine to shoot 7-under 65 and capture first place by a stroke over De La Salle’s Jaden Dumdumaya and Consumnes Oak’s Zachary Mate at the CIF NorCal regional golf championships at Berkeley Country Club in El Cerrito.
