CONCORD — It looked like a mismatch and that’s exactly how it turned out for De La Salle.

Charles Greer returned the opening kickoff Friday night for a touchdown and Ronald Pierce ended the game with a 94-yard interception return for a TD.

In between, De La Salle kept the scoreboard operator plenty busy, overpowering Monterey Trail of Elk Grove 68-6 to run its record to 2-0.

Since leading St. Mary’s of Stockton 17-16 at halftime last week, De La Salle has outscored the opposition 103-6 over the past six quarters.

That halftime address last week by coach Justin Alumbaugh and his staff must be still ringing in the players’ ears as the Spartans extended their unbeaten streak against California teams north of the Fresno area to 318 games.

Luke Dermon threw for 137 yards and four touchdowns and also ran for 42 yards. Greer finished with two touchdowns — the kick return and an 18-yard run across the goal line.

Marley Alpati also rushed for two touchdowns.

Before the season, Monterey Trail (0-3) looked as if it might pose a challenge to the Spartans. But that thought went out the window when Folsom and Los Gatos won by significant margins over the Mustangs the past two weeks.

De La Salle led 28-0 after the first quarter and 42-0 at halftime.

It was 55-6 after three quarters.

Next up for De La Salle will be a trip to Mountain View on Sept. 10 to play St. Francis.
