Firefighters and officers were called to the intersection of Alum Rock and Jackson avenues around 10:10 p.m. for a report of a three-vehicle crash, said San Jose Police Department public information officer Gina Tepoorten.

A man was driving a 1999 Honda sedan eastbound on Alum Rock Avenue, Tepoorten said, and collided with a northbound 2016 Tesla. The Honda continued through the center bus lane onto westbound Alum Rock, where it hit a 2019 Dodge Durango.

The male driver of the Honda ran from the scene and remains at large, according to Tepoorten. He is described as about 40 years old with a thin build and wearing a red jersey.

San Jose fire officials extricated two men from the Honda and rushed them to a local hospital, where Martinez was pronounced dead.

The drivers of the Tesla and Dodge were not injured, according to Tepoorten. They remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

San Jose fire Capt. Mitch Matlow said a total of nine people were injured in the crash.

The hit-and-run remains under investigation and police are urging anyone with information to call 911 or Detective Brian McMahon at 408-277-4654, or anonymously at 408-947-STOP (7867) or svcrimestoppers.org. Tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward.
