OAKLAND — The cause of two separate fires that damaged homes in the Seminary neighborhood and Laurel District are under investigation, authorities said Monday night.
Shortly after 7 p.m., firefighters aboard an engine responded to reports of a possible house fire in the 6200 block of Bromley Avenue and arrived to find light smoke from its front door, Oakland Fire Department spokesman Michael Hunt said.
After advancing hose to a back bedroom, firefighters were able to handle a small fire there while more firefighters aboard a truck vented smoke to clear the home and knock it down within fifteen minutes, Hunt said.
Around 8:30 p.m., firefighters responded to reports of a fire in the 3200 block of Georgia Street in the city’s Laurel District.
Firefighters arrived aboard an engine moments later to find light smoke from a working fire on both floors of a two-floor home, and called for three other engines, a truck and battalion chief.
That fire was declared under control by 9:15 p.m. Two residents were displaced, with Red Cross Bay Area staff notified to provide support, Hunt said.
“With the backdrop of this week being the anniversary of the 1991 Oakland firestorm, tonight was a keen reminder of the important role of urban firefighting,” Hunt said Monday night.
“The swift and effective response by multiple crews tonight for two dangerous structure fires demonstrated again our readiness to respond to all manner of incidents, at a moment’s notice, in order to protect life and limit exposure.”
There were no other reports of injuries, and damage estimates were not immediately available.
