An Antioch man died late Tuesday night after he walked onto Highway 4 near Pittsburg and into oncoming freeway traffic, the California Highway Patrol said.

Authorities on Wednesday identified him as 35-year-old Terrence McNeal-Bonner.

McNeal-Bonner was walking in the eastbound direction on the highway just east of the Loveridge Road on-ramp when he was hit, according to the CHP. A gray Toyota Camry was unable to avoid him.

The collision happened about 10:50 p.m. McNeal-Bonner died at the scene, the CHP said.

The Toyota driver was not injured.

The crash marked the second fatality in three nights on the Contra Costa County portion of the highway. The two wrecks are the first two fatal ones of 2022 on that roadway.

Sixteen people lost their lives in fatal crashes or pedestrian collisions on that part of Highway 4 in 2021. The highway connects western and eastern Contra Costa County, then continues east past Stockton.

The CHP diverted traffic off of Highway 4 at the Railroad Avenue exit and closed every lane to investigate. They issued a Sig Alert for severe traffic. They opened two lanes about 12:33 a.m. and all lanes by 12:55 a.m., according to the CHP.
