Piedmont schools need a progressive fix to funding
Re: “Piedmont voters should reject increase to record tax” (Editorial, Eastbaytimes.com, Oct. 12):
Piedmont school tax and bond obligations are already as expensive as any in the state. We are now asked to increase the tax about 25% for an average home. We all benefit by increased real estate values substantially created by our excellent schools. Larger homes increase in value more than smaller homes so a progressive tax solution is appropriate.
Other local cities use a single progressive tax based on building size. This progressive tax is the fairest tax solution and can provide all revenue being asked for including the 25% increase. Voting No on G and H leaves the Piedmont schools funded at current levels and ample time to put a progressive tax before us.
The 2019 district survey reveals that nearly three-quarters of Piedmonters support a single progressive tax solution. Instead we have Measures G and H which are 80% regressive. Ask for a progressive tax solution by voting no.
