PIEDMONT — A woman working as an aide for a UPS driver was arrested after she delivered a package on the victim’s front porch, signed for it, then stole its contents and continued on her route, police said.

Unyque Marie Alley, 40, of Oakland, was arrested shortly after the incident Tuesday night and booked at the Berkeley City Jail on suspicion of petty theft, according to investigators.

Piedmont police Capt. Chris Monahan said the victim, who lives on St. James Place, ordered an Apple iPad via Amazon and that the package was scheduled to arrive Tuesday.

Video footage allegedly showed an aide for a driver with United Parcel Service Inc., wearing a reflective yellow vest, delivering the package, signing for the delivery, then removing and stealing the contents.

Within three minutes of the delivery, the victim went outside to retrieve the package, found it was empty, then reviewed their home surveillance system and discovered what had happened, Monahan said. Police were called about 9:50 p.m.

Piedmont police said they identified Alley, who was arrested on the delivery route, as the suspect after contacting UPS.
