Travel restrictions are set to take effect across the U.S. on Monday as the novel coronavirus outbreak continues, having so far killed more than 300 people in China and infected more than 16,000 worldwide, CNN is reporting. Among those 16,000 infected so far are almost a dozen U.S. cases.

Public health officials over the weekend confirmed three new cases of coronavirus in Northern California, including an adult woman in Santa Clara County and a husband and wife in San Benito County.

The new case in Santa Clara County is not related to the county’s first confirmed case, which was announced Friday and involved a local man who returned Jan. 24 from Wuhan, China, where the disease originated, according to a news release Sunday from the Santa Clara County Public Health Department.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) informed Santa Clara County officials of the case Sunday morning.

“The two cases we’ve confirmed in our county to date are both travel associated … and both of them were essentially remaining in one residence since they came,” Santa Clara County Health Officer Dr. Sara Cody said at a news conference Sunday. “That’s why I don’t think these two cases change the risk to the general public.”

As the number of people in the U.S. infected with the virus grows, The Pentagon has approved a Department of Health and Human Services request for facilities capable of housing at least 250 people in individual rooms through Feb. 29. Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield was tapped to be one of four U.S. military bases on standby to house overseas travelers who may need to be quarantined.
