Protests in the daytime gave way to looting after nightfall for a second straight day in the Bay Area.

Demonstrations denouncing the killing of George Floyd, an African-American man, by Minneapolis police officers were mostly peaceful Saturday. A diverse crowd held signs with messages such as “Black Lives Matter,” “Blue Lives Kill” and “White Silence is Violence” in San Francisco while listening to speakers on the steps of San Francisco’s City Hall. Authorities kept people off the freeway though protesters did manage to close an off-ramp in the city.

That changed after night fell as looters wreaked havoc all across the Bay Area. Dozens of people broke into the Best Buy in Emeryville and made off with televisions and other merchandise. The string of thefts hit the city’s Powell Street Center as well with Ross, Men’s Wearhouse, Chase bank, Metro PCS and Starbucks bearing the brunt of the crime. Meanwhile in San Francisco, looters targeted high-end stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Coach, Salvatore Ferragamo and Swarovski. The ransacking also hit Walgreens and CVS.

Because of the unrest, San Francisco Mayor London Breed announced a curfew Saturday night and asked the National Guard to help restore order. The curfew will run from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The photo gallery above shows some of the early demonstrations of the day and more images coming soon show the looting on Saturday night.
