Player of the year: Shamar Garrett, De La Salle | story
Offensive player of the year: Jerry Johnson, Pittsburg | story
Defensive player of the year: Nusi Malani, Serra | story
Coach of the year: Patrick Walsh, Serra | @coachwalsh20 | Despite losing his star quarterback before the two most crucial regular-season games of the season, led the Padres to a share of the West Catholic Athletic League championship, plus Central Coast Section Division I and Northern California Division 1-A crowns. Won 13 games for the second time in program history, matching the 2017 team that celebrated a state title. Played in a state final for the third time in four seasons, nearly rallying from a three-touchdown deficit in the last five minutes of the title game against Corona del Mar before falling 35-27.
First team
Quarterback: Dorian Hale, De La Salle, 6-1, 190, junior
First-team All-East Bay Athletic League Mountain Division selection helped lead De La Salle to its 28th consecutive North Coast Section championship. Out of the veer option, ran for 577 yards and 14 touchdowns and passed for 2,038 yards and 19 TDs while completing 59 percent of his 198 attempts. Threw for 207 yards in a loss to St. John Bosco in Open Division state championship game. As with other DLS starters, played one half or less in a majority of the games because of lopsided scores.
Quarterback: Jerry Johnson, Pittsburg, 6-3, 170, senior
Bay Area Preps HQ offensive player of the year. Helped Pittsburg reclaim the Bay Valley Athletic League championship from Liberty, in addition to going on a run to the North Coast Section Division I final. Chosen second-team all-league behind Liberty’s Jay Butterfield. In NCS Division I semifinal against Liberty, wore a shirt after the game that said, “2nd Team Who?” Threw for 350 yards and three touchdowns in the 21-14 playoff win over Liberty. Also passed for 248 yards and a TD in a blowout loss to De La Salle in NCS final.

Ran for 1,141 yards and 19 touchdowns, caught 16 passes for 258 yards and two TDs and completed 3 of 5 pass attempts for 172 yards and three scores. A stellar safety, he recorded 12 tackles and forced a fumble in a loss to St. John Bosco for the Open Division state title. Led Knights to a share of the league championship and to the final of the North Coast Section Division III playoffs. Will play at Oregon State.
Running back: Paul M. Rosa, Wilcox, 5-8, 180, senior
While the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division MVP stood out in the secondary, even after missing limited time with an injury, Rosa put his stamp on offense as he managed to compile 1,787 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground in essentially nine games. The coach’s son added 11 catches for 199 yards and a pair of TDs. In the Central Coast Section Division I playoffs, Rosa avenged a loss in last year’s final by throwing a half-back option for a 74-yard TD and rushing for 255 yards and two scores, including the game-winner in overtime.
Wide receiver: Troy Franklin, Menlo-Atherton, 6-2, 170, junior
Alabama, Texas, Tennessee — and virtually every team in the Pac-12 — are in touch with this five-star recruit. A year after helping M-A claim a CIF state title, Franklin continued to show his skills with 43 catches for 674 yards and nine TDs. Once again, he saved his best for last with six catches for 118 yards and a pair of scores in the CCS Division I playoffs.
Wide receiver: Terence Loville, Serra, 6-0, 185, senior
A two-way standout and three-star recruit as an athlete, Loville never needed to be wide open to make a big play. Discounting a windy rainstorm in the CCS final, he hauled in 48 catches for 1,061 yards and 10 touchdowns — including an almost heroic effort in the CIF Division 1-A title game with six catches for 172 yards and a pair of scores. Throw it up, Loville will catch it.
Wide receiver: Brian Andre Pierce Jr., Pittsburg, 5-9, 175, senior
Not necessarily an imposing figure, the first-team All-Bay Valley Athletic League selection continued to make an impact. During a 24-21 overtime win over Liberty in the regular season, he had 11 catches for 121 yards and a pair of TDs, in addition to a sack.
