Sonoma’s Mocabee house and studio barn, which seemingly float above vineyard views, seem to have roots in several eras, agrarian and modern all at once.
The home is one of six featured in the upcoming virtual Modern Homes Tour, presented June 26 by the Modern Architecture + Design Society.
The exterior of the house is done in Western red cedar siding, the studio barn is white clapboard and a long exterior façade allows occupants to move seamlessly from their rooms to a large deck outdoors and back into the shared communal spaces.
The house, used primarily as a summer home, has a modern feel, thanks to white painted wood walls and soaring ceilings, but it also evokes camp. “I wanted to highlight this element of California living, this organic way of living between the inside and outside within your daily experience,” architect Gustave Carlson said.
The house, centered on a 4-acre property, has a relaxed open plan that lends itself well to entertaining.
