Novato police arrested an Oakland man suspected of stealing an armful of jackets from the Sports Basement store.

Marcus Anderson, 28, was booked into Marin County Jail on Tuesday on suspicion of burglary and organized retail theft.

The crime was reported at around 12:20 p.m. Sunday. The store is in the Vintage Oaks Shopping Center.

Anderson and a female accomplice allegedly entered the store, grabbed large amounts of jackets and walked out. Anderson and the accomplice loaded the stolen merchandise, estimated to be worth more than $1,000, into a car and fled, police said.

The car was seen again at the shopping center on Tuesday. Police responded and contacted Anderson at the Ross store, where he unsuccessfully tried to return merchandise without receipts, police said.

Police allege that Anderson was able to return merchandise at two other stores. A search of his car revealed a “significant amount” of new clothing and a device used to remove tags, police said.

Police are searching for the accomplice involved in the theft on Sunday. Residents with information are encouraged to call the Novato investigations section at 415-897-4361 or email crimetips@novato.org. Anonymous tips can be provided to Bay Area Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
