No. 10 Half Moon Bay 39, Terra Nova 7

The annual “Skull Game,” played Friday night at Terra Nova, was all Half Moon Bay as the Cougars capped a 10-0 regular season with another dominant performance. Half Moon Bay had already gone undefeated to claim the Peninsula Athletic League’s Ocean Division title — the middle division in the league’s three-tier setup. But in three games this season against opponents from the PAL’s top division, the Bay, the Cougars were flawless, beating Burlingame 45-26 and routing Sacred Heart Prep 40-0 and now Terra Nova by 32 points. Friday, Half Moon Bay put the game away with 20 first-quarter points and added 12 points in the third quarter to take a 32-0 advantage into the final period. Sophomore quarterback William Moffitt ran for three touchdowns and passed for two to lead the way as Half Moon Bay completed its second undefeated regular season in three years. The Cougars won 14 in a row in 2017 before losing in a state championship game. Terra Nova finished the regular season 6-4.

Salinas clinched the outright Pacific Coast Athletic League Gabilan Division championship as Carl Richardson threw five touchdown passes, giving him 32 on the season, and caught a touchdown pass in the Aptos fog. The Cowboys will now wait and see where they end up in the Central Coast Section playoffs, with a top seed in Division II or a low seed in the heavyweight Division I bracket expected. The seeding meeting is Sunday. Josh Powell ran for 125 yards and a touchdown to lead Aptos, which fell to 5-5, 4-3. The Mariners are likely to land in Division III for CCS.

For Moss, a sophomore, the TD catch was his eighth of the season. M-A played without both leading receiver Troy Franklin and leading rusher Thomas Taufui because of illnesses, coach Steve Papin said. Menlo-Atherton led 28-3 at the half. The King’s Academy (7-3, 2-3) lost for the third straight time after starting the season 7-0.

Los Gatos (9-1, 5-1) cut Mountain View’s lead to 10-7 by halftime on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Yost Girvan to Dillon Whitfield and a Ty Goldsbury point-after touchdown kick. Burlingame 22, San Mateo 10

Burlingame stretched its winning streak in the Little Big Game to 10 games, scoring the final 15 points after San Mateo led 3-0 and 10-7. Lucas Meredith’s 42-yard run with three minutes left in the third quarter gave Burlingame the lead for good, 14-10. San Mateo had taken a 10-7 lead when Luke Bergstrom tossed an 18-yard scoring pass to Michael Vendel, Burlingame, which holds a 56-32-4 advantage in the series that began in 1927, finished the regular season 5-5. Santa Rosa 31, No. 24 Piner 27

Piner saw its quest for an undefeated season come to an end as Santa Rosa quarterback Trevor Anderson threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Roman Correa with 36 seconds remaining for the winning score. Piner (9-1, 3-1 North Bay Athletic League Redwood Division) had won each of its games by at least 39 points before Friday’s loss. Santa Rosa (4-5, 3-0) scored more points than all of Piner’s opponents combined this season. Santa Rosa led 18-7, but Piner moved to within four points after an Adrian Torres eight-yard TD run, then held a 20-18 lead at halftime after a 30-yard scoring pass from Yonaton Isack to Sumail Berhe. Santa Rosa’s Mason Frost rushed for 278 yards on 27 carries and two touchdowns, including a score that put his team up 25-20 in the third quarter. But a 29-yard keeper for a TD by Isack gave Piner the lead back at 27-25 entering the fourth quarter.

Hillsdale 42, Aragon 7

Nahan Iskander ran for three touchdowns and Kasimili Tongamoa got the scoring started by returning a blocked field goal 90 yards for a TD as Hillsdale (7-3, 3-2 Peninsula-Ocean) coasted past Aragon. Now coach Mike Parodi and his players must wait to see if they’ll be one of seven at-large teams to make the 40-team Central Coast Section playoffs. Parodi was optimistic on Saturday that his team would make the cut. The Fighting Knights finished third in the Ocean Division behind undefeated Half Moon Bay and San Mateo, which was 8-1 before Saturday’s game against struggling Burlingame (3-5). The CalPreps.com computer rankings will be one of the factors used in determining CCS playoff teams. Parodi said Sunday morning’s 8 a.m. rankings will be locked in as the last set of rankings the section seeding committee can use. Aragon (1-9, 0-5 Peninsula-Bay) finishes with its worst record in the MaxPreps era dating back to 2004.

Watsonville 27, Santa Cruz 20

In possibly the biggest upset of the night on Friday, Watsonville got two touchdowns and 198 yards rushing from Blake Mares and a recovered fumble in the end zone by Nasser Sabla to beat Santa Cruz. The Wildcatz were dead last in the Pacific Coast Cypress at 0-5 entering the contest. Santa Cruz had already clinched the league title at 5-0. Watsonville jumped out front 14-0, but Santa Cruz fought back to tie. Then the Wildcatz scored two more unanswered touchdowns, and Santa Cruz had non answer. The Cardinals, who finished 7-3, are still headed to the Central Coast Section playoffs. Watsonville, which ends its season at 3-7, will have some momentum to take into 2020.
