A former bachelor’s pad has been transformed into a floating home for a busy woman, who found living on the water fun, relaxing and re-energizing.

Jane Krueger’s Sausalito houseboat is one of a dozen featured in the upcoming Floating Homes Tour, sponsored by the non-profit, all volunteer Floating Homes Association, which gives visitors a taste of what living on board a houseboat is like and spotlights the possibilities in design and decor.

Krueger, who has lived in Sausalito since 2004, commuting to San Francisco by bus and ferry, decided she wanted to live someplace fun and special. Four years ago she bought her home, which was one of two identical houseboats on Liberty Docks.

Both houseboats had been built as bachelor’s pads, but Krueger remodeled hers into an open and airy home. And one of the first things she did after the remodel was to christen her home “Summer Place,” named after Max Steiner’s theme song from the 1959 movie “A Summer Place,” which starred Richard Egan, Dorothy McGuire, Troy Donahue and Sandra Dee.

“It sets a peaceful and relaxed theme for my home,” Krueger says.

The lower level, dockside, features a bedroom/office space as well as a laundry and storage. The upper level contains a bathroom with tub and shower. A fully-equipped modern kitchen and dining area sits amidships.

One of the standout features on the houseboat are the breathtaking views from the waterside, visible from both the living room on the lower level and the loft bedroom with its own patio above. Access to the floating dock beyond is through the living room.

One interesting design element is the stairway railing, made from an oar, which gives the main living  area a nautical feel to accompany those water views.
