A young woman whose family reported her missing from Oakland in January has been found dead in Northern California near the Oregon border, police said.

A hiker found the body of Tatiana Dugger, 19, of Los Angeles on March 28 on U.S. Forest Service land in a remote area about eight miles northeast of Weed, the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office said. Her body appeared to have been in the location for an extended period, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Dugger, reported missing Jan. 9, was identified by DNA on April 1, police said.

Detectives located phone records that showed Dugger’s last known location was in Oakland, according to the Butte County Sheriff’s Office. Dugger had lived in Butte County, in Oroville, before moving to Los Angeles late last year, the Butte County Sheriff’s Office said. Oakland police had met with Dugger’s family and helped distribute missing-person fliers, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Members of the Siskiyou County Major Crimes Unit attended Dugger’s autopsy, that county’s sheriff’s office said. Police released no further information about the circumstances of the young woman’s disappearance and death, saying the investigation continues.
